Monday on Today 10/29

Sorry for the long gap between posts but it's been busy here and besides, I'm sure you didn't really miss much of importance on Today. Even if you did, they're sure to have another segment covering the same topic. They're known to repeat themselves quite a bit. There's only so much interesting material to cover. And speaking of material worth covering, how about those Red Sox? If you haven't heard already, they won the World Series last night after sweeping The Colorado Rockies. They won the same way they did back in 2004 after being down three games to none in the playoffs, they came back to win their next seven games and won the series. It was great. And I was up until after 1 watching the celebration. But it was worth it.

Moving on to what was noteworthy on Today. How about Asian eye surgery? Yes, some Asian women don't like the way their eyes look, so they're seeking eyelid surgery. Whatever, it's their money. They also showed some pretty cool Halloween decorations you can make yourself for your house and some fun stuff for the kids. Go the website at todayshow.com for more info.

Today's Relationships featured 7 Rules To Break such as the "Don't Get Jealous" rule--didn't know that one. Anyway, be territorial (according to the experts). Don't go to bed mad--break it. Sometimes it's better to sleep on it. That makes perfect sense. You can't always make up just because it's bed time. No secret crushes--it's okay to fantasize as long as you don't act on it. Wow him in bed--forget that, be selfish. Sounds good to me. Share everything--nope, you need solo time. I know the title said seven rules, but this is all they gave.

Trick or Treat: Ready For Some Halloween? This just showed some traditional and not so traditional Halloween treats like a candy apple kit, green apple candy corn, chocolate candy corn, chocolate skulls (white chocolate), edible jack-o-lanterns--not sure of the flavors, and chocolate spiderwebs. Some of these looked mighty tasty. For more visit the website.

And the show ended with the Toyota Concert Series featuring country music star Josh Turner. I guess they're doing this on Mondays now instead of Fridays. Not to mention it's inside since it's freezing out now--30 degrees when I put my son on the bus this morning. That's too cold for October.

And that's a wrap.

Tuesday on Today 10/23

This is an abbreviated version today since I missed most of the show. My toddler had her two year check-up today, so we had to leave early. New and noteworthy on the third hour was the first lady of California, Maria Shriver, discussing the emergency state that California is in because of those devastating wild fires. She was also holding a meeting of the spouses of the presidential candidates. As I'm writing this I'm watching a special edition of 20/20 about the fires. It's amazing how they can create ashes out of one house and leave the house next door untouched.

And one more thing to mention today was a segment called Heart Healthy: Know 5 To Stay Alive. This was about women's heart health. They say one in three women has heart disease or will develop it. Most people think of heart disease as mostly a man's problem but it effects just as many women. Just in different ways. So the five things you should know are: your blood sugar, which should be less than 100. That's news to me. I'm sure I've never even had mine checked. Cholesterol is important and should be less than 200. Eating a healthy diet is also on the list, which should include good fats like olive oil and canola oil. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Quit smoking and reduce stress. They didn't give any hints on how to do those last ones but I'm sure if you need help with either one you can easily find it online. Start with EFT--it's amazing. You can use it to help you with just about anything you can think of. Look in my sidebar under Things I've Tried That Worked. You won't be sorry.

And that's a wrap.

Friday on Today 10/19

Yesterday they had a special hour on the fourth hour of The Today Show all about surviving breast cancer. Since October is breast cancer awareness month, Hoda Kotb decided to share her video diary of her ordeal with surgery for her breast cancer. It was very inspiring. I called my sister to watch since she is battling the disease now. She was already watching and just starting radiation this week. My sister was getting chemo but her doctor stopped the treatment after the report that chemotherapy doesn't really help breast cancer patients much. Too bad she had to feel sick and lose her hair before they realized this. Anyway, they also had experts discussing the myths of breast cancer such as antiperspirants and bras cause cancer--they don't. But then again, nobody really knows what does cause breast cancer. More research needs to be done.

Today on the fourth hour they had segment on about cancer in dogs. Just because your dog gets cancer, doesn't mean it's a death sentence. There are so many treatments available for pets with cancer now. Jill Rappaport and her dog, Jack (who had cancer) were guests. Ironically, I also had a dog named Jack who had cancer. Her Jack had his whole leg amputated. My Jack had half his foot amputated. But my Jack's cancer came back internally and eventually killed him. I know as a dog owner that most of us would do anything for our precious animal companions. What they didn't mention was how much these treatments cost. I'm sure chemo and radiation aren't cheap. Surgery isn't either. But at least there are more and more options as long as you have the money or pet health insurance to cover the bills.

This week's Reality Check dished about Stephen Colbert announcing his run for presidency. Why not? Nobody could be worse than our current president. Imus is back on the air--good for him. Yeah, he made a stupid comment, but last I recalled, his title was "shock jock." That's why he's on the air in the first place. If you don't like it, don't listen. And of course everyone is talking about Ellen's doggy gate. If you haven't heard by now, Ellen Degeneris adopted a dog from a pet rescue, then decided it was too "rambunctious" for her so she gave it away to her hairdresser. This was not allowed by the rescue and she signed the contract agreeing that she would not give the dog away. She broke the rules and the rescue came and took the dog back. Then she balls her eyes out on TV, begging the agency to give the dog back to the people she gave him away to. I just have a couple of things to say to Ellen. First of all, get it together and try to do your show professionally without breaking down into heaving sobs on the air. Second of all, you agreed to give this dog a good home and then decided the dog wasn't worth your time. Shame on you, Ellen. I thought you were an animal lover. When you adopt a dog, it is supposed to be part of the family. It's a good thing you didn't decide to adopt a child. Adopting a dog is a major decision and should not be taken lightly. It is common procedure for adoption agencies to refuse to let the adoptive "parents" give away the pets they adopt. The agencies are there to make sure these animals go to good homes. You can't just give away a dog you've made the commitment to adopt. Somebody has to look out for these dogs. I have no respect for people who give pets away like clothing when they're done with them.

And that's my rant for today. Have a great weekend.

Tuesday on Today 10/16

New and Noteworthy on the third hour of Today was a segment about clothing with a cause. Levi's is making jeans with organic cotton and Nike has shoes made from recycled material. Great idea and kudos to them for doing something to help the environment. Also, October is breast cancer awareness month (I never know why they need a special awareness month; aren't we always aware?). Anyway, there are some special garments with symbols on them keeping the awareness campaign going. Good causes to think about before you go on your next shopping spree.

There was more noteworthy material on the fourth hour with Today's Relationships: How To Spot A Bad Man. Relationship psychologist, Brenda Wade, told women the signs of a narcissist, like needing attention all the time--a bad sign. So is emotionally taking more than he is giving. Her advice if you happen to be dating one is don't make him bigger and better than you. Don't rationalize or explain his behavior. Trust your feelings if you repeatedly feel hurt. And be prepared for a guilt trip or anger if you break up.

Soda And Bone Health: Does Drinking Cola Pose A Risk? Today diet and nutritional editor, Madelyn Fernstrom says it does only if you are drinking soda instead of milk. If kids are drinking a lot of soda, they're not drinking much milk. But she also said the effect of caffeine and phosphorus is negligible. So watch what you drink, get calcium fortified orange juice if you don't like milk or choose a calcium supplement with vitamin D if necessary.

Today's Money featured a segment called Don't Fall In Love With Your Stock. Obviously you have to let it go some time so don't get attached. I don't know why people would want to buy individual stocks anyway. Mutual funds are much easier and you don't have to worry what stocks are falling or rising. Jean Chatzky and Karen Blumenthal both suggested a diversified portfolio--today's page from the book of the obvious. And that's easily achieved with mutual funds, so there really isn't a need for this in the first place.

The Intellectual Devotional: A Daily Dose of American History is a new book by Noah Oppenheim for people who want to learn but don't have time to study. Sounds like a fun way to learn more about American History. Which is something we should all know.

Surprising Home Remedies showed some natural cures for common problems. For instance, ginger is great for gas and stomach upset. There are many ways to eat it or drink ginger tea. Apple cider vinegar eases digestion but you should dilute it because it tends to burn going down--sounds great. Garlic is helpful for lots of ailments but today they suggested using it to treat athlete's foot. Cayenne pepper is is good for a sore throat. Add 1/2 teaspoon in warm water. Wilted cabbage leaves help bruises heal and cinnamon may lower blood sugar. They also mentioned turmeric possibly for cancer, but I'm not positive about that. For that and more information about natural home remedies, go to the website at todayshow.com

And that's a wrap.

Friday on Today 10/12

New and Noteworthy on Today's fourth hour was a story in all the New York newspapers, "Naked In The City." Some guy was walking around the city without a stitch of clothing and the funny thing about it is not that he's totally care-free and walking around the crowded city in the middle of the day, but that people are passing by without so much as a second glance. Only in New York.

Next up was a segment called Coffee Talk: What does your order say about you? Some people--such as Finesse Mitchell who has a new book about dating--say that if you order something like a double mocha latte with skim milk, half a sweet and low at 140 degrees, then you're probably high maintenance. I don't know why Finesse Mitchell has written a dating book. He was on SNL a couple of years ago. I assume his book is humorous. But I think I'd have to agree with that assessment. If you're that picky about your coffee, then you probably need everything in your life to go just so and aren't happy unless they do. In other words, a complicated order, a complicated life. If it's your first date, you might want to order a little something less fancy. Or as Finesse says, order what you normally would so your date knows exactly what he's getting into. This was more about women than men, but I think the same could go for guys too.

Then they had on An Unlikely Love Story: The Tortoise And The Hippo. After the tsunami hit in 2004 an orphaned baby hippo named Owen became attracted to a 130 year-old giant tortoise named Mzee. At first Mzee didn't want anything to do with the baby hippo, but soon the two became inseparable. I don't know the name of the zoo they're in, but they are separated now for their own safety. They can still see each other though. I just hope they're still happy. They look so adorable together. It really is an odd looking couple.

And as with every Friday, we had a Reality Check with the lowdown on Lindsay who has just left rehab--how many times is this now? She has apparently fired her mother as manager. Maybe she's too much of a bad influence. Anyway, Lindsay's moving to Utah and they seem to think she can come back. Unlike Britney Spears who just seems to sink lower and lower every week. All anyone can say to her now is "Stop Driving!" Go get drunk and drug yourself into a coma, but don't put everyone else on the road in danger. I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear of her untimely demise in the near future due to an "accidental" overdose. Apparently, the hospital where George Clooney was treated at recently for the motorcycle accident leaked his medical records to the press. We didn't learn anything new here though. And there is going to be a Spice Girls reunion. As Toure says, does anyone really want to hear those songs again? I know I don't. And finally, anyone who has eyes can see that Jennifer Lopez is pregnant. Who is she trying to fool? And I wonder she's trying to hide it. She won't be able to much longer (if she is at all).

And that's a wrap. Have a great weekend.

Tuesday on Today 10/9

Hello and I hope everyone enjoyed a nice long weekend--for those who got the day off yesterday. New and noteworthy on Today was a segment about cell phones and children. Parent Alert: Are Cell Phones Bad For Children? A Swedish study found a link between cell phones and cancer in children who use them. A US doctor disputed those findings and says cell phones are safe. I question if that doctor was hired by Sprint or AT&T. The cell phone industry is huge and just like the pharmaceutical industry, heavily armed with powerful lobbyists. I don't think there will ever be a link between cell phones and cancer discovered in this country because the industry will have their own doctors dispute any claims made. The thing that bothers me is, cell phones are relatively new, especially to kids. Nobody knows for sure what the long term effects of regular use are. Why risk your kid's health just so you can keep tabs on them at all times? Is it really worth them possibly getting cancer later in life just so you can contact them any time you wish?

Blondie sang a song from her new CD. Her voice is a bit deeper but she can still hit the high notes.

A new study shows that bad relationships are bad for your heart if you're a woman. Which kind of goes along with that study recently in the news about women who don't have close friendships being at risk for heart disease. It's as bad a factor as having high blood pressure or being obese. And women who keep silent during disagreements with their spouses are also at risk. I guess it's true that bottled up emotions are not only a cause of depression but also heart disease. Sometimes I wish I could keep some of my emotions inside--just to avoid fighting so fervently. I wonder if arguing your point until you're in a rage is any better? The key to better heart health--as well as mental health--is learning to express your emotions in a more positive manner. It sounds easy enough but try to remember that the next time somebody does something to piss you off.

That's a wrap.

Friday on Today 10/5

Today was the big Today Throws A Martha Wedding event. I didn't see the ceremony but they kept showing the reception at Tiffany & Co. throughout the third and fourth hours. I thought it would be bad enough getting married on national TV but they have to do it first thing in the morning too. I wonder what time the bride had to get up to get her hair and make-up done, 4:00? I'm amazed they actually pulled it off without a hitch. It showed their first dance during the fourth hour.

Also noteworthy during the third hour was a new children's book by Maria Celeste called "The Magic Cane." It's kind of an old fashioned fairy tale complete with the "once upon a time" beginning and happy ending. Looks good if you want to give your kids something new that's a throwback to the original children's story. My two-year old daughter already loves fairy tales and saying "once upon a time." Check for the book with my Amazon search box if you want to learn more about it.

Scott Baio dropped by on the fourth hour to discuss his reality TV show, Scott Baio's Reality Love Life. I think the title pretty much sums the show up.

More interesting was a two-headed turtle named Limerick. He's actually Siamese twins with one head going one way, and one going the other. The poor thing/things looked like they were trying to take off in two different directions. I think Limerick is at some pet store in Manhattan if you want to see him/them in person.

It's Friday, so they had their weekly check-in with Reality Check: This Week In Pop Culture. Of course, there's Britney Spears who's been dominating the tabloids with no signs of letting up. At least Toure and Susie Essman weren't making excuses for her or feeling sorry for her. I'm so sick of people saying they hope she gets therapy and gets her kids back. Maybe the kids are better off without her? She obviously hasn't put them first in her life, so why should she be allowed custody? Then they moved on to Gary Craig's stupidity in coming up with all kinds of cockamamie excuses as to why his foot wandered away from his stall. Does he really think anyone is believing his bullshit? He should just admit he's gay and move on. What could be worse than looking like a lying moron? Then again, he is a member of the same political party as the idiot in chief. They also discussed The Knicks' sexual harassment, OJ, Cavemen (the show) and Rosie O'Donnell, but there's really nothing more to comment on.

And that's a wrap. Have a lovely Columbus Day Weekend.

Tuesday on Today 10/2

Here are the highlights from today's third hour. Today's Family featured reality TV stars Jon and Kate plus 8. Jon and Kate had twins and Jon thought they were all set, but Kate wanted just one more. But they didn't just get one. They ended up with sextuplets. The kids were very antsy and noisy during the interview, which I found funny since I can't even keep my one toddler in control in public. I can't imagine trying to keep eight of them in line. Mom stays home with the kids and Dad takes over when he gets home from work to give her a break--which is helpful and I think essential for any stay-at-home mom. You can check the Today show website for dates and times of the show.

Today's Fitness had more workout tips from The Biggest Loser. This week's loser was a 62 year-old grandfather who lost 31 pounds in one week. And he certainly didn't stop there. After he was voted off the show he lost a lot more--a total of 99 pounds. He got a trainer to help him after the show. They all get trainers. Seems that's the thing to do if you have a lot of weight to lose. It sure makes things easier if you can afford it.

Cesar Millan, aka The Dog Whisperer, stopped by the plaza to talk about his new book "Be The Pack Leader." He had a few tips for dog owners such as dogs need exercise--about 45 minutes a day. They don't need it all at once but they are a part of the family so you do need to make time for them. My Boston terrier loves to play and get exercise but my bulldog not so much. If we take them for walks beyond 25 minutes, they both act like they've just run a marathon. Obviously bigger dogs need more exercise and smaller dogs less. Cesar says never to discipline your dog when you're angry or frustrated (just like kids). Provide affection when your dog is calm. And to keep your dog from begging at the table, set up a boundary. Personally, I don't mind begging, and my dogs clean up all the crumbs and spilled food off the floor as if falls from the table. Kids aren't the neatest of eaters.

Take It Off Today featured Secrets Of Successful Dieters with nutritionist, Elizabeth Somer. The first secret: take responsibility. Walk a lot--a good way to get exercise every day. Get real about your size and the size you think it will be possible to reach. Don't forget to give yourself treats once in a while so you don't feel deprived. Eat foods with lots of water in them to fill you up faster. Eat two fruits or veggies at every meal. And eat soup and/or vegetable juice and you'll consume fewer calories all day. Calcium aids weight loss as well as strengthens bones. For more tips, get Elizabeth's book "Habits That Mess Up A Woman's Weight Loss."

And that's a wrap.

Friday, September 28, 2007

Thursday on Today 9/27

New and noteworthy on Thursday's third hour of Today was a segment about Stopping Emotional Abuse. "The Bully In Your Relationships" is a new book by Anne-Renee Testa about how to stop being bullied. A bully demeans you, takes advantage of you and makes you a low priority--like you mean nothing. She suggested some tips to stop being put down by first getting out of denial. Acknowledge that it's happening and assess your options. Confront the bully and don't back down. Take action and tell him/her "I don't like the way you're treating me and the kids. This behavior will stop or I'm changing the locks." Well, that threat might work on a reasonable person but aren't most bullies unreasonable? Ironically, they had a segment on prior to this about sex and how to get a better sex life with your partner. Maybe if they focused on fixing the relationship in other ways, such as this, they might have an easier time getting what they want in bed.

The best sandwich in America was revealed, but I missed what it was. But you can now vote for a name for the new baby walrus that was born recently at the NY Zoo. It's adorable but the names you get to choose from aren't so cute. You can visit http://todayshow.com/ for more information and to see the choices.

Melissa Ethridge closed the show with a song from her new CD Awakening. She also joined the cohosts on the fourth hour to discuss life and music. She said she wants to do everything and have everyday for love and joy and love fully. She has four kids and she waits for them to finish school at the end of the year before going on the road so they can all go with her. She faces life without fear. After cancer I guess that becomes easier. Seeing her recover so well is an inspiration. My sister is now battling breast cancer and I hope she fares as well.

Sex therapist, Laura Besman was a guest for a segment called Great Sex After 40. There are many women who lose their desire at this age so it's a big problem that no one is talking about. Nobody is talking about it? That's all anybody ever talks about. They just did a sex segment on the third hour. Look at all the magazines on the newstand. We're bombarded with it. She says to put your relationship before the kids. The kids will be better off when their parents are happy. This is true. So many couples put their lives on hold--including their relationships--after having kids. But kids are happier when their parents aren't fighting and bickering and are in a loving marriage. And she also suggested the opposite of what the third hour experts said and that is to schedule sex. On the third hour, they claim it becomes too routine when it's scheduled. Well, better routine than nonexistent, right? If you don't schedule it, it becomes a low priority.

Trace Adkins was a guest and has a new book, "A Personal Stand: Observations From A Free Thinking Redneck." He was also a judge for the dancing that Hoda Kotb did with her partner who taught her the Texas Two-step. He obviously did a good job because she won the dancing contest they had this week among all the cohosts on the fourth hour. Natalie did the Tango, Ann did some hip-hop and Tiki Barber danced a waltz. But viewers voted and gave Hoda 53% of the vote. I guessed that she would win. Her dance looked like the most fun, too.

And that's a wrap.

Tuesday on Today 9/25

I'm doing a compilation of yesterday and today since I ran out of time to post yesterday. On the fourth hour yesterday the ladies and their guests discussed emotional cheating. Innocent or unfaithful? Can a relationship ever recover? Those were the types of questions posed to Rene Syler, author of "Good Enough Mother," psychologist Judith Sills, editor Victoria Zacheim and Caroline Leavitt who has first-hand experience with this subject since her first husband was a cheater. Basically, the consensus is that yes, emotional cheating is infidelity even if the cheaters never physically touch each other. One third of divorces are because of emotional cheating. Wow, that's a lot. But there really isn't much more to get into here on this subject. That's why I just incorporated it into today's post.

Today's Family featured a segment called Parenting Your Parents. They showed a daughter who is constantly telling her parents what to do and correcting them--considered nagging. She's in her mid-twenties and her parents aren't that old, so this is not well received. The basic advice of this segment is: no nagging. If your parents are getting up in the years and you're worried about their finances or health, then step in and try and help. But don't make it seem like you're trying to take over their lives. Trust me, they won't accept your advice no matter how well intentioned. I see my sisters doing it constantly with my mother and she doesn't appreciate it, to say the least. My advice is to offer a helping hand, and don't make it seem like you think they're incompetent. Try to put yourself in their position. And think of how you want your own kids to treat you in the future.

Today's Fitness featured Workout With The Biggest Loser. You can read the new book "The Biggest Loser Fitness Program" and get more tips on losing weight. Today's tips were: stay hydrated. That basically means to drink water constantly--don't even think about it, just drink. Always have water with you. I always do. It makes sense since sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger. Always plan ahead. Have healthy snacks with you at all times so the drive-thru doesn't look so tempting. And educate yourself. The book has tips from all the contestants. They all lost weight, so they must work. Check my Amazon search box for it right here.

Next up was something called Free To Be Me. I guess it's a new regular like Today's Family or Critic's Corner (which is up next). Today's segment was about do it yourself hairstyles with Katrina Szish. They showed some before and afters. One used an at home hair painting kit to get some really nice looking highlights. Only problem is you need to have a "hair buddy" to help out especially with the back. And take it from my experience, it's hard enough doing the front by yourself, so don't ever attempt to do the back. I had the scars to prove it. Luckily hair grows back. Anyway, the problem is, this is supposed to be "do it yourself." If you need help, you're not doing it yourself. The next new do was on someone who added bangs to her long hair. But do you think she cut them herself? Of course not! You can't ever attempt to cut bangs into hair that doesn't already have them. But once they're there, you can trim them up yourself by cutting upward into the hair rather than straight across. Unless you like looking like a three year-old. Again, this is not something that was done by herself. So the title is kind of a misnomer if you ask me.

Moving on to The Critic's Corner, Gene Shallot reviewed "In The Shadow Of The Moon" about the first trip to the moon, or something like that. He raved about it. I went back to eating my breakfast because it looked like a real snoozer to me. But anything about space and rockets just makes me tune out immediately. I guess I should say "space out." Sorry, I had to find some humor in an otherwise humorless review of a boring movie. OTOH, Gene apparently also reviewed "Eastern Promises" with Viggo Mortenson and Naomi Watts earlier in the show and though he basically gave it a good review, he did say that it deserves an NC-17 rating for its relentless violence. I'm still adding it to my must-see movie list. I love Viggo Mortenson, especially when he's bad. He's so good at it.

And finally, another book was featured: "The Hollywood Trainer Weight Loss Plan." Author, Jeanette Jenkins showed some moves such as the single leg squat, the one leg pick-up where you bend down to pick up something up off the floor with your legs straitht, lifting the back leg so you look like a flamingo--this helps work on balance too. She also demonstrated some isometric abdominal work, some of which you can do in your car by contracting your muscles while you're stopped at a traffic light. Check out the book for more moves.

And that's a wrap.

Friday on Today 9/21

I had every intention to post about the 11:00 hour yesterday, but I was thwarted by an interruption from G.W. Bush--the most loathsome face I have the displeasure of seeing on my TV on an almost a daily basis. Yesterday he gave a speech about why he'll be vetoing a bill to extend health care benefits to more children. In it he gave false information about the Democrats wanting people making up to 83,000 a year to get free benefits for their kids. But that wasn't true, as I read in today's paper. He lied to make it look like he's saving taxpayers money instead of being the cold-hearted bastard he is by cutting health benefits for kids. He'd rather your tax dollars go to fund that fiasco of a war in Iraq that he started for no good reason. Personally, I'd prefer my tax dollars go to the benefit of kids rather than to the detriment of thousands of people. And yes, Iraqis are people just as the American soldiers who are dying over there every day. Okay enough of my venomous rant--that asshole brings out the worst in me. Not to mention our country.

Today on Today's fourth hour they had that gigantic family--you know the one with seventeen kids--on for a visit. Can you imagine the size of the carbon footprint they're leaving? I seriously think both those parents should get some kind of psychiatric evaluation. No sane person has seventeen kids. It's got to be some kind of mental illness. Even if they love their kids and are great parents, how can they not consider their impact on the environment--in diapers alone? People are supposed to have families, not tribes. And if you think seventeen is too many kids, well they're not even finished yet. Yes, they want more. How is that fair to the kids they already have? How can they possibly give the individual attention the kids need when they have so many? They all seem happy and well cared for, but I honestly question their ethics and selfishness in not even considering the thought of population control. Nobody wants to discuss it, but it makes a huge impact on us all. I'm grateful people like this are not the norm, but at the same time it does get me angry that some people can be so incredibly selfish. Population control is an important part of curbing global warming by reducing the impact of the strain on our natural resources. It's a finite number. Unlike this couple's ability to reproduce.

There was also a segment on how menopause can make you fat as well as what you should eat to avoid gaining weight. It was the usual stuff they always tell you to do like eat a balanced diet and exercise. How many times can we hear the same advice repackaged as new? You don't have to get fat as long as you eat right and exercise. Well, if it was that easy, we'd all be stick figures wouldn't we?

Then they had a new segment called This Week In Pop Culture where they had a couple of gossip mongers discussing the likes of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline and their custody battle. Who would've thought he'd be the one most likely to get custody. Everyone thought she was crazy to marry him. Now we know that she's just plain crazy. He's lucky to be rid of her. I feel sorry for those kids. They also mentioned something stupid Jessie Jackson (what a surprise). He criticized Barak Obama for acting too white. He is half white. Is he supposed to hide that and pretend to be all ghetto to get votes? Give me a break.

They ended the show with someone making something with chocolate.

And that's a wrap. Have a great weekend.

Wednesday on Today 9/19

Here is what's new and noteworthy on the 9:00 hour of Today. Straight Talk: Kids' Tough Questions. An iVillage contributor--sorry, didn't catch her name--was a guest discussing how to handle your kids' curiosity. Her advice was to encourage questions and answer them honestly. Talk to them about upcoming difficulties that you know will have them asking questions such as an impending divorce or the like. For kids under eight, keep it simple and be patient--let them spit it out before you jump in and try to finish their questions for them. For kids over eight, play it straight. They want to be treated like adults and want to be included in the conversation. She also suggested to prep your babysitter so that he/she knows how to handle questions. Share your personal values with your caregiver and have them defer questions. Have them monitor your kids and let you know. Isn't that their job, anyway?

Life Lessons: A crossing Guard's Story. Her message: stay in school. This lady was a dropout in the sixth grade and had a 4th grade reading level. She enrolled in classes, got her GED and now reads at a 10th grade level. Then she got her first real job as a crossing guard. Unfortunately, her husband died of cancer only two days into her new job, but she says he stayed around just long enough to see her succeed. Her goal is to get a degree and become a social worker. She says you can go back. It's never too late and at 50, she's proving that. She's a good person to spend time around kids to give them positive messages and encouragement.

Dave Barry stopped by for a visit to joke about and discuss his new book, "History Of The Millennium So Far." He gave a few funny examples that can be found in the book such as when the Boston Red Sox won the world series in 2004 and it was written in the Bible as a sign of the apocalypse. That may sound like a joke, but as a Red Sox fan, I really thought the world could end now that they had won after thinking it could never possibly happen. I mean, it had been since 1918. But there is plenty of fun stuff in the book I'm sure. Dave is so funny. I miss his weekly syndicated columns. Look for his new book in my Amazon search box here on this page.

Another new book is "Down To Earth, A Guide To Global Warming" by Laurie David and Cambria Gordon. It's geared toward kids and what they can do to help stop global warming before it's too late. Laurie David was a producer on Al Gore's academy award winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth." We must teach kids about reading, writing and saving energy and the three R's: Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. The book is an entertaining way to get kids involved and become part of the movement. The future is in their hands and they're going to be the ones to solve the problems of climate change. Everyone should get this book and give it to a kid they know. Do your part to save the earth.

And that's a wrap.

Tuesday on Today 9/18

It's been a while since I wrote about what's happening on The Today Show. My brother died last Friday, so my life has had a bit of an upheaval, but I'm trying to get back to normal. So here is what was new and noteworthy on Today.

"Your Child's Divorce: What To Expect, What To Do" is the name of a new book by Marsha Temlock. It gives parents whose children are going through a divorce some pointers on how to behave. It deals with grandparents rights when children are involved as well as some other pointers such as, demonstrate loyalty to your child and withhold judgment. She also says that showing your support is not the same as agreeing. Also when children are involved, they need the support of all adults involved. In other words, every adult better act like an adult, if you know what I mean. Sometimes that's difficult to do during a divorce. For those and other tips, you can get the book. You can use my Amazon Search Box on this page.

Today's Fitness: Get Motivated With Lessons From The Biggest Loser. Amber Walker was a contestant on the show and was recently booted off. But she didn't let that stop her from losing 65 pounds with the help of Biggest Loser trainer, Bob Harper. His suggestions for being a successful loser are to find a support group, take responsibility for what you eat by starting a food journal, and from today's page from the book of the obvious: work out--especially weight training.

The Today Show is looking for Today's Best Sandwich In America. You can vote online for people who like to participate in that sort of thing.

Today's Classroom featured Today Show contributor and nutritionist Joy Bauer who talked about food smarts for kids. She gave some suggestions for meals that help kids' brains develop--or something to that effect. Good suggestions for breakfast were oatmeal and fruit, scrambled eggs with black beans (that looks and sounds delicious, not to mention the tremendous nutritional benefits). For lunch you can pack a sandwich on whole grain bread along with some fruit or carrot sticks or you can pack up some leftovers from dinner--if you're kids are willing to take it. And for after school snacks you can serve peanut butter and apple slices with some honey or dry cereal right out of the box--my kids' favorite. No chips, cookies or candy--also my kids' favorite but only as special treats. Any way to get Omega 3s is important because they are most concentrated in the brain. I think that means they're very important for brain function and development. I give my kids supplements because they don't like a lot of healthy foods. She mentioned sprinkling something on food, but I didn't hear what it was. Maybe Wheat Germ? I read that was a good source of nutrients once.

And that's a wrap.

Wednesday on Today 9/13

New and Noteworthy yesterday was The Rapp Report with highlights of Jill Rappaport's interview with Ralph Lauren in a segment entitled Ralph Lauren Revisited. He is still very hands on even though he's old enough and rich enough to retire. But he loves what he does and wants to make sure it gets done right. There was a star studded gala honoring the famous designer which included the likes of Mayor Bloomberg, Barbara Walters, Vera Wang, Martha Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick and Dustin Hoffman, all singing Ralph's praises.

Today's Style featured Mia Garcia, author of "The Black Book Of Style." Her advice is there is no set of rules when it comes to style. Must haves: the little black dress. You can never go wrong with it. Also on the list is a trench coat, a white button down shirt, perfect pair of jeans, ballet flats and a beautiful pair of pumps. Even I can't argue with those. Get the book for more style ideas. Sounds fairly down to earth and reasonable, unlike a lot of fashion advice you see on TV and magazines.

In today's installment of Today Throws A Martha Stewart Wedding Cody and Jessica learned to dance for that very special first song at the reception. They chose "Into The Mystic" by Van Morrison as their song. Interesting choice. Al Roker claimed he never heard of it. Either he's lying or doesn't know anything about music. He's certainly old enough to know it. Anyway, there was a dance instructor giving them lessons while someone sang the song--which you couldn't hear over the dance instructor's commands. It was also Jessica's birthday, so they brought her a cake and sang happy birthday. How sweet.

Today's Kitchen had executive chef of Cooking Light Magazine on. He made some corn flake-crusted fish. Any type of fish will do. His motto--and that of the magazine's is eat smart, be fit and live well. For that and other light recipes, check out the magazine.

Here are a couple of noteworthy topics from the fourth hour from yesterday and today. I've combined them because there weren't many. Up first is the ongoing investigation into the McCanns who are still under suspicion in the death of their four year-old, Madeleine. The ladies--Hoda, Ann and Natalie discussed whether or not they thought they were guilty. The consensus seems to be that they are not. Otherwise why would they go to the Pope and David Beckham? Plus other celebrities got involved such as J.K. Rowling. They just aren't your typical child killers. Maybe they're right when they say they're being framed. I hope authorities are able to find who really did this soon.

Today's Family: Balancing Work And Motherhood. This was a noteworthy segment which featured some moms who've made it big on their own. They wanted to stay home with their kids and work at the same time (don't we all?) so they went into business for themselves. Got a million dollar idea? Their advice for moms who want to become stay at home mom/millionaires is that first you need to invest some money. They didn't really cover what to do if you don't have any at first. But you need some support (financially too, obviously) and find a good partner--one who has money would be a good pick. Also be bold and do something you're passionate about. This is the same advice I got in business school. Finding a partner who shares your passion is a hard part--at least for me. I'm still on my own, but I like it that way. Although my husband does help out by drawing some adorable bulldogs for some of my T-Shirts. By the way, we've got lots of new designs for fall. Check them out at http://cafepress.com/karmicbulldog.

That's a wrap. Probably for the week, since my son has an appointment with a neurodevelopment specialist tomorrow to see why he has low muscle tone and it will probably take a while.

Have a great weekend.

More Monday on Today 9/10

This is a bit of an extension of yesterday's post since it was the first day of the fourth hour on The Today Show. This hour has just three co-hosts, Ann Curry--who's not doing the news in this hour, Hoda Kotb and Natalie Morales. This hour seems to be dedicated more toward women's issues. Though, the first three hours are too. The first segment was a sit down discussion on women and aging called Graying Gracefully: Embracing Your Age. Nora Ephron was a guest along with a couple of actress/models who look great despite their advanced age. One had natural silver/gray hair that looked really pretty at shoulder length. I personally think gray hair looks good at longer lengths. I don't know who ever wrote the rule that once a woman is over a certain age or has white hair she must wear it short, but it's about time that was changed. You shouldn't cut your hair just because it's gray or white. And forget hair dye. It looks so much better natural. It just looks too fake after a while. But to each her own. At least women have a choice and can get a fairly decent dye job for a price. Men cannot no matter who does their hair. They always end up as copper-heads and the result is laughable rather than sexy. Anyway they discussed how women are judged more harshly than men. Especially in Hollywood where actors can get prime roles right into their 60's (think Harrison Ford), but actresses are shelved once they get to be a certain age. Sure, Meryl Streep and Jane Fonda are still at the top of their game, but do you see them paired with men 30 years younger for action/romance flicks like their male counterparts? There is quite a double standard. Women have to start standing up for their rights. Starting with shedding the husband's last name tradition. Why give up your identity for a man? We've come a long way since the suffragette movement, but we've got a hell of a long way to go for equality. Let's stand up for our rights and not bow to old standards. Who says we're the weaker sex? Women live an average of 5.2 years longer than men. Okay, enough of my rant. Their advice for living a longer, healthier and happier life was: self acceptance, which comes from the inside. And let go of other's perceptions. Do what you want, you've earned it--that's my advice.

After that discussion, the three co-hosts discussed the disaster that Britney Spears called a performance at the MTV Awards. It was supposed to be a come-back, but most say it was a come-down. Just when you thought the 25 year-old trailer trash bleach blonde couldn't sink any lower, she surprised everybody with an abysmal stage show that made people either shake their heads or just laugh because it was so pathetic. I just hope her kids are placed in a loving home with people who put their welfare above getting their next fix. Obviously, Ann, Hoda and Natalie didn't tear her apart like most people have (myself included) but even they didn't have a kind word to say about the former pop princess. If you're looking for a place for people to give honest opinions and not shy away from controversy, better switch over to The View. But so far, this is a good alternative for some informative stories. And I like it better than the third hour, so my main focus might switch to this new fourth hour show, which is a show within itself. Only problem is, my son is back in school and I have to get him off the bus about 40 minutes into the show. Seems the important stuff comes early on anyway, so we won't miss too much.

They're also going to feature Best In Show every day and today's doggie guest was a collie mix who broke all sorts of records on the obstacle course circuit--or whatever they call those things where dogs jump through hoops, among other things. The dog jumped rope and even walked up a set of stairs on its hind legs.

My only question is, since this new hour airs at 11:00 (there's an hour break between 9 and 10 for Regis and Kelly, at least on my local NBC affiliate), so what happened to The Martha Stewart show which used to air at 11?

And that's a wrap.

Monday on Today 9/10

Where's Madeleine? The McManns Under Suspicion. This was how the third hour of the Today show got started today. I'm sure everyone has heard the story by now about the missing 4 year-old girl who's parents are now suspects in her death. They're no longer calling it a disappearance but a death. There is only circumstantial evidence such as blood with Madeleine's DNA found in the parents' rental car three weeks after her disappearance. And since this is outside the US, there is a lot that we don't know. The parents are both doctors and showed no signs of being abusive, but they did leave her alone in the hotel room--or so they say. Who knows. I hate to see parents involved in the death of their child in any way, but I also am going to wait to see all the facts before I judge them. Actually, it's not my job to judge them at all. It's a sad case for all involved. Guilty or not.

Susan Sarandon was a guest in the studio today to discuss her new movie with Billy Bob Thornton, "Mr. Woodcock." It opens this Friday and looks hilarious. Sarandon's character falls in love with Thornton who happens to be her son's worst nightmare--the old gym teacher who made life miserable for him in school. Now that the summer is over, the studios start releasing their good movies. Summer movies are for teens with nothing better to do than waste money on popcorn and movie tickets.

Top Dog: America's Fastest Chihuahua stopped outside on the plaza for a visit this morning. Maddy is actually a mix of poodle and Chihuahua who won the race for that title.

Brian Williams made a guest appearance with the co-anchors to announce a nightly news ongoing story this week, "The Secret To Her Success." Stay tuned to your NBC news to find more about what that's all about.

The Third Annual Quill Awards were announced today, and a few of the winners are: In Fiction, "The Road" by Cormick McCarthy, nonfiction, "The Assault On Reason" by Al Gore--remember him? The guy who won the election in 2000 when the presidency was stolen by the idiot sitting in the White House--make that Crawford Texas--right now. There would be no Iraq war if it wasn't for Florida. "Angels Fall" by Nora Roberts won for best romance and best children's chapter book went to Brian Selznick for "The Invention of Hugo Cabret."

Today's Working Woman featured "Smothered" author, Amanda Lamb and psychologist Dale Atkins, author of "Sanity Savers." They each gave advice for working mothers such as prioritize and laugh--at situations and yourself. And be present for your kids. You'll have to read the books to get more tips. Feel free to search my Amazon box for either or both of them.

Today's Kitchen featured the author of "Kitchen Playdates," Lauren Deen, showing you how you can catch up with your friends and still spend quality time with your kids in the kitchen. The idea is for your friends to bring their kids and you all cook up some fun stuff. Sounds like anything but fun to me, but I'm not a cook and my kitchen isn't big enough for my whole family, never mind inviting someone else's over too.

That's a wrap. Stay tuned for my wrap-up of the first day of the fourth hour of Today tomorrow. Yes, a fourth hour. But that's enough for today.

Thursday on Today 9/6

Noteworthy Today: "Scream Free Parenting: Raising Your Kids By Keeping Your Cool" author Hal Edward Runkel gave some advice for parents such as you're not totally responsible for your kids. What he means is that they are not a direct reflection of you. They are human beings. Your job is to make them confident and independent so they grow up to be good, decent human beings. This sounds like a great book which I'll put on my TBR list. I would suggest it for any parents. You can use my Amazon box here to buy it. There were more tips, but I couldn't hear them since my toddler was screaming. Just because we as parents don't scream, doesn't mean our kids won't.

Today's Consumer Smarts featured Janice Lieberman giving advice on how to get a deal on furniture. She suggested going to High Point, NC to Furniture Land South, the biggest furniture outlet in the country. Or shopping in Boyles Furniture Showroom. Shop in January or July for free shipping. My question is, is it really worth it to travel to NC if you don't live anywhere near there just to get a deal on furniture? Surely the cost of travel will outweigh any bargain you get on your furniture set. Just my opinion, FWIW.

A Simpler Life: The Appeal Of Rural America. Apparently they've compiled a list of the best rural places to live and number 10 is Polk County, North Carolina. Number one is Baron County, Kentucky. Those places are fine if you're content with farming and your idea of a shopping trip at the mall consists of getting a jar of peanuts from the corner drugstore. But some people don't need busy lifestyles, so it fits for them.

Father Knows Less Or "Can I Cook My Sister?" is the name of a new book by Wendell Jamieson about the crazy questions kids ask. It was inspired by the author's son who kept asking questions and his father decided to try to find answers to all his questions. That's a dedicated parent. Anyway, one question was "Why does it always rain in car commercials?" Something I'd never really noticed before, but I try to ignore most commercials. The answer is that cars look better on a wet road than a dry one. It brings out the car colors better. Why do doctors have messy handwriting? The answer is because they are too impatient to take time to write legibly. Too bad they don't consider the importance of what they're writing--such as prescriptions that could help people or kill them if they get the wrong dose. Another question is, why is there war? Nobody answered this. You can read the book for a long and detailed response by someone who finally took the time to answer. But I can tell you why right here: because the world is run by men. If women ran the world, there would be no war. Plain and simple.

The Oprah Effect: Can Winfrey Deliver For Obama? This is the first time Oprah has endorsed a presidential candidate which some say could backfire because people don't like being told whom to vote for. That's true. Personally, I don't think it will get him elected, but she is helping his campaign by hosting fundraisers which raise millions of dollars.

Today's Kitchen featured America The Beautiful's New Orleans with Cooking On The Gulf Coast. A couple of chefs from local restaurants cooked up some red fish, shrimp, prosciutto wrapped tuna and other stuff.

That's a wrap.

Wednesday on Today 9/5

Picking The Dress: Today Throws A Martha Stewart Wedding. This installment had the audience voting on one of many designer gowns. I found this not to be noteworthy, but if you want to vote you can visit todayshow.com.

Alda's Rebirth. Alan Alda, author of "Things I Overheard While Talking To Myself," was a guest and discussed his new book and why he decided to write it. He is so funny and the book titles alone are enough to make you want to read them. I just picked up his last one, "Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I've Learned," but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Today he was talking about his near death experience while mountain climbing in Chile. Then he heard a voice in his sleep asking if he'd lived a life of meaning. So, he's reexamining his life and no longer afraid of death. I just talked to someone recently who had a near death experience and said the same thing. Weird.

20 Years Of Barney: I Love You, You Love Me... Yes, the big purple dinosaur stopped by the plaza today for a giant birthday cake, to the delight of my two year-old daughter. It was a brief visit, to the disdain of my two year-old daughter.

Where is Camille? Search For Missing BYU Student. This was a story about the continued search for 22 year-old Camille Cleverly who's been missing from Provo, Utah since August 30. She was last seen with her mountain bike. Someone used her debit card the day after she went missing. Authorities are trying to figure out who used it. Anyone with information is asked to call 801-852-7421 or 852-6210. The family has also put up a myspace page to help spread the word and try to find her. Good luck to them. That whole debit card use is really suspicious.

Little Helper: Bill Clinton praises an eight year-old girl for organizing trash clean-ups on beaches. She even got to meet the former president. Wow, I wonder if I started a program like that if I could meet him too. It makes me long for the days when we had an intelligent and caring president. One who spoke eloquently instead of sounding like a bumbling idiot every time he opened his mouth. Let's hope he's back in the White House soon as the first First Gentlemen--or whatever he'd be called.

Today's Kitchen featured Pantry Must-Haves: eggs, milk, fresh vegetables, canned chicken noodle soup--which you add the fresh veggies to and make it your own. You should also stock your kitchen with oils, seasonings--dried herbs and spices, cheese, Rice Krispies--or a similar cereal to make treats with.

And that's a wrap.

Monday on Today 9/3

Happy Labor Day. What a gorgeous weekend we're having here in the Northeast. Sunny and low 70's every day. There are going to be a few changes to this blog which I started implementing last week. Instead of summarizing everything that happened on the last hour of the show, I'm only going to give you what I think was worthy of my time, therefore worthy of yours. Normally that would cut out most of the information, but The Today Show is extending to a fourth hour--can you believe it? So, maybe the blog will be much shorter, maybe not. I'll give you what I think was noteworthy and hopefully that will save me time and not waste yours.

So let's get started with Today's noteworthy stories. Watching Your Back: See Something, Say Something. Bill Stanton conducted an experiment where he started spray painting graffiti on a building and waited for someone to say or do something to stop him. Lots of people looked but no one called the cops or got involved in any way. He's trying to get the message across to people to become heroes. You don't have to physically stop someone during public disturbances, but you can call the cops. When he asks people why they don't call, people tell him they don't want to be involved in police reports, but you can remain anonymous. Or people will say they thought someone else would call. If everybody is always leaving it all up to someone else, nothing is ever going to get done. Stand up and do something! Be a hero. You can see more of "Wild" Bill Stanton, Watching Your Back tonight on Dateline. I'll be watching.

Bobbie Brown had make-up tips for back to school, but I didn't find this noteworthy. If you do, you can see them at todayshow.com. It was mostly make-overs and these teachers and students are unlikely to duplicate the results themselves.

Helping Hand: Book Drive For Thai Children. This story was very noteworthy. Nineteen year-old Andrew Titley, with the help of his seventeen year-old brother Trevor, collect book donations for these underprivileged children, most of whom are being raised by their grandparents while their parents work in Bangkok. Libraries are filled with books they no longer need and lots of people throw out used books, so why not donate them to kids who are trying to learn English? Kudos to these kids.

Leonard's Look had an interesting (therefore noteworthy) story about the King and Queen of Jumping Beans in Albuquerque, NM. They have the world's largest jumping bean company and are proud of it. I had some of these when I was a kid and was fascinated with them. They are moth larva that are sensitive to light and heat for months until they either die or hatch into moths. I don't know how they get them, but they help out the locals and economy and have rekindled interest in the beans. This made me want to get some for my kids.

Another noteworthy bit was Peace Players: Live Together, Play Together about two brothers who took basketball to places like Northern Ireland, South Africa and the Middle East. The message: if you can play together, you can be friends. And so far it's working. They showed an Arab Palestinian kid who lived across from a Jewish kid and the two had never met until they played basketball. Now they're friends. So there you have another set of brothers doing good deeds for people half-way around the world.

Today's Kitchen featured Last Minute Labor Day Barbecue with marinated chicken and pork along with teriyaki and fresh ginger.

And that's a wrap. Tomorrow I'm going to open house at my son's preschool so there will be no Tuesday on Today this week. Till Wednesday.

Friday on Today 8/31

Who Makes The Cut? Top 100 Power Women. They didn't go over the whole list but there were a few mentionables like Meredith Viera at number 55 and Hilary Clinton at 25. Oprah was on it of course at around 21 or 26--I can't say for sure. Elizabeth McDonald from Forbes was talking about who all the movers and shakers were. Most of the women are not from the US and they never showed the names on the screen. You can check out Forbes Magazine for the complete list.

A family from Wisconsin won a Vacation Do-Over. They were some of the survivors of the vacations from hell, and according to the audience who voted, they had the worst of it and deserved another shot. Hope they have more fun time this time around.

Tony Orlando appeared on the plaza after losing 100 pounds or as The Today Show called it, "Knocking em off," in a tribute to his song, "Knock Three Times." Then Tony, along with the co-hosts broke into "Tie A Yellow Ribbon," which was cut off by a commercial--Thank God.

First the audience picked the couple, now they get to pick the wedding band! And I'm not talking about who's going to be playing "Daddy's Little Girl," at the reception. The couple doesn't even get to choose what rings they'll be branded with during their on-air ceremony. Then again, they're not stuck with the bill either. I'm starting to understand why someone might want to be married on live TV--so they don't have to foot the enormous bill!

Today's Classroom had a segment called Getting Ready For Middle School. But I missed most of it. You can get the information on the Today Show website if you're interested. What I did see didn't look that useful but they showed some nice folders where your kids can store everything. You can probably just get those at Staples or any other store.

Today's Kitchen featured Cooking With Giada. Tony Orlando came back to join them as did Natalie Morales's son, Josh. He's adorable but I have no idea what they made other than it was Greek.

And that's a wrap. Have a happy holiday weekend!

Wednesday on Today 8/29

Today's Style featured Back To School Fashion with Laurie Gelman of iVillage. I'm pretty sure she is the wife of Michael Gelman from Live with Regis and Kelly. Anyway, there was a kid fashion show which was too funny because a lot of these little kids tried to escape the runway. Today it was a run-a-way. She had to keep calling them back to show the audience what they were wearing. And speaking of back to school fashion, I've just added several new kids items to my store at http://cafepress.com/karmicbulldog. Come and check out my new designs on Tees and sweatshirts.

Today Throws A Martha Stewart Wedding featured Martha Stewart herself showing how to pick out flowers for that special day. My advice is to let someone else handle that. You're going to be too busy trying to fit into your dress and picking colors for the bride's maids to worry about whether the flower arrangements are the right height for the tables. The flower tip of the day: If you're on a budget, pick flowers that are in season.

Where Are They Today? This segment had Minnesota school bus hero Jeremy Hernandez, who saved 52 kids during the bridge collapse. So, where is he now? On The Today Show, not too shabby for a 20 year-old summer coordinator for a youth gym. Obviously, he cares about kids. He says his life is changed and I'm sure that's a good thing.

Abigail Jones and Marissa Miley wrote a revealing look at teens and sex in their new book "Restless Virgins," about a sex scandal at the upscale Milton Academy in Connecticut. Roni Cohen-Sandler is a psychotherapist who discussed the draw-backs of kids' casual attitudes toward sex, especially oral sex, which some kids as are treating as if it's nothing more than a handshake. This is quite scary. Boys have come to expect it from girls and girls feel pressured to perform. The moral of this story is that parents really need to talk to their kids about sex and get beyond the facts. We especially need to address the problem with boys since they seem to think it's cool and girls end up destroying their self-esteem. They must learn that sex is anything but casual and can be extremely dangerous--even deadly. You know, there are various diseases that nobody ever seems to talk about anymore like cervical cancer (which can be caused by an STD), AIDS, not to mention Herpes which isn't deadly but permanent. You may wish you were dead if you caught it--put fear into the kids. Sex should be feared at that age.

Another Vacation From Hell with Peter Greenberg showed a family who went from Philadelphia to Orlando by train because one of the kids had a fear of flying. The train was disabled with no air conditioning, lights and even the toilets had shut down. They flew back and the kid's fear miraculously disappeared. Moral of this story: Don't let your kids have the power to make you change your travel plans--unless they're sick as in yesterday's story. Only those parents didn't care and went anyway. But they paid a hefty price.

Kevin Nealon was a guest talking about an upcoming show he's hosting, World's Funniest Commercials. He actually went to school for advertising. I wonder how he ended up on SNL instead. Anyway, most of the commercials I saw in the clips didn't look that funny. Don't we see enough commercials as it is? Why do we need to see entire shows comprised of nothing but ads? Then they have commercials in between the commercials. When does it end? This post ends here.

And that's a wrap.

Tuesday on Today 8/28

Going It Alone: Single Mothers Today. This was mostly about moms who choose to be single mothers as well as moms and dads raising children together but remaining unmarried. I guess the main emphasis was on moms choosing to remain single with or without the dad being involved. There really wasn't much news here. Sally Tusa from Baby Talk Magazine said that half of single moms are involved with the fathers of their children. Michele Borba, parenting expert, says that 80% of moms think children need two parents. The bottom line is happy parents make happy kids. And there are four things every kid needs: to feel safe, to be accepted, to be loved and clear expectations. I think she forgot some like food, clothing and shelter. Anyway, dads do matter. All kids need a positive male influence even if dad doesn't live with them.

Miss Teen South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton, showed why beauty contests are an insult to all females. This girl makes the entire human race look bad. I'm sure you've all seen the video by now of Miss Teen South Carolina babbling incoherently about the "US Americans," as if there are any other kind, "the Iraq" and South Africa when asked why 1/5 of Americans can't locate America on a map. The answer to that is they probably have IQ levels around the same as this dummy trying to answer the question. The Today show didn't even have the guts to show the video again. Too bad because it was much more entertaining than listening to her trying to defend herself. She said she was shocked by the question. Yeah, that's a real tough one. They gave her a chance to answer the question after she'd been coached and memorized her answer. Who cares about that? You look stupid on TV you shouldn't get a chance to answer the question after you've already bungled it. Who does she think she is? George W. Bush?

Today's Style featured Must-Haves For Fall. Galina Espinoza from People Magazine told everyone what they need to buy such as Fuscia shoes or bags and Luxe Jewels. You need one bold statement to go with your more subtle pieces. She also showed some Oxfords for women, full blouses and belted dresses. You can see those and the rest in the fall issue of Style Watch.

Next up was another installation in a continuing segment called Vacations From Hell with Today's travel editor, Peter Greenberg. Today's story was about a whole family who got sick on the way to Mexico and instead of turning around and going home, they spent the entire vacation in their hotel room sick. If you're going to be sick, wouldn't it be better to be at home? Not to mention they all got on the plane and barfed into their bags, spreading germs to fellow passengers. I wonder how many other families' vacations were ruined because of their selfishness. Peter Greenberg had some suggestions for a worry-free vacation such as learn the refund policy. That's a pretty important one. Consider extra insurance, especially abroad and bring emergency medications (like Pepto-Bismol?).

Lucky and Flo are DVD Dogs who find illegally pirated DVDs. To Catch A Thief (original title) was the name of this brief show of these trained dogs' talents. According to Dan Glickman, President and CEO of the MPAA, pirating costs the industry around 18 billion. These adorable black labs proved there's nothing dogs can't sniff out once they know what they're looking for. Or should I say sniffing for? Dogs are always trying to please humans. We should be grateful for their love and help. Michael Vick and anyone involved with dog fighting should be forced into a fight to the death with Mike Tyson for being so cruel and heartless toward man's best friend. Yes, I am a dog lover, as if you didn't know already. You can see pictures of my bulldog and Boston terrier at http://cafepress.com/karmicbulldog.

And that's a wrap. Till tomorrow.

Monday on Today 8/27

Today's Money: How To Live The Good Life - Get Rich Quick. Don't get too excited by the title because it's a misnomer. It should have been called How To Get Rich Gradually. Unless you win the lottery, you're not going to get rich quick. Today's money experts had some suggestions for living large on less. The first thing to do, according to Money Magazine's Donna Rosato, is write down where your money is going. Others were: hit sample sales, buy one expensive item and inexpensive trendier pieces. For a chic home, design with accessories and paint. Jet set travel: go off season, especially beach vacations. Do home swaps or rent an apartment or villa since hotel costs are so high. Trick yourself into saving by using a 401k and an online savings bank. And stop throwing money away on stuff like Starbucks cappuccino--help the environment too by not stocking up landfills with paper and styrofoam cups. If you only use 10 out of 300 channels, get rid of your cable--it's such a waste. Too bad cable companies don't let you choose what channels to pay for. So make them pay, by dropping their service. Maybe then they'll get the message. And finally, if you only use your cell phone, drop your land line.

Today's Classroom had Back To School Cool. They showed some new products like a new age water bottle that's better than plastic and fits in the backpack. Speaking of backpacks, get a messenger bag like they showed there or visit my store at http://cafepress.com/karmicbulldog and find some there with an adorable bulldog on them--much better than a boring old backpack. They also showed some sports backpacks that store gear. You can get some notebooks with skull and crossbones at Office Max--if your kids are into that. Then they showed some stuff like a sound binder for $30 that has a speaker for an ipod, a USB drive that fits on a key chain, an MP3 study board with an ipod plug, and a locker organizer for $49. I'm sure the money experts from the previous segment would frown on spending so much on all these gadgets. Are they really necessary?

George Lopez paid a visit to the plaza promoting his movie "The Underground World Of Ping Pong." It's a spoof. It opens on Wednesday.

Also stopping by the plaza this morning was newly crowned Miss Teen USA, Hilary Carol Cruz from Colorado.

Moving on to more substantial topics, Ann Curry interviewed Kris Carr, author of "Crazy, Sexy Cancer Tips." Kris Carr is a cancer survivor who documented her cancer treatment and found her life. She was diagnosed with a rare vascular cancer at age 31. It was a catalyst for her and changed her life. There are 77 tips in her book for other cancer survivors but she listed a few here: breathe, create your cancer posse (your support network), shop around for a doctor and create boundaries. She ended up marrying her book editor. I guess he liked the book.

Let's Get Physical: Fitness Toys For Kids. This featured a bunch of toys to get your kids off the couch and into shape like a giant bubble maker so kids (and dogs) can chase the bubbles, carpet skates--just what they say and look like a lot of fun, a Fisher Price exercise bike, exercise video games, The Plasma Car and a few more. The baseball video game looked fun too because your kid is actually swinging at a ball and playing the game. Just another way for parents to spend more money on toys their kids will get bored with after a few months--if you're lucky enough to get that much use out of them.

And that's a wrap. Till tomorrow.

Friday on Today 8/24

Not a lot of useful information on the show today but here it is.

Today's Money: Does Money Buy You Friends? Yes. But those aren't the kinds of friends you want. Vera Gibbons from CNBC and clinical psychologist, Barbara Melamed, were the guests today taking viewer e-mail questions about problems with friends and money. The best advice: If you have money, don't buy people. If you don't, don't take advantage of those who do. That's basically what this segment boiled down to.

Al's Book Club For Kids discussed "Bud, Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis. It's about a kid growing up in depression era Michigan. Bud is named after the author's uncle. Mr. Curtis discussed his book with some kids. And as Al pointed out, kids do better in school when they read books over the summer. The book club is also continuing through the school year and the next book in the series is "The Golden Compass" by Philip Pullman. So get the book for your kids so they can participate. You can use my Amazon search box to find it.

Volleyball star Gabby Reece was out on the plaza this morning promoting her new job as spokesperson for Athlete, The New Voice For Women In Sports. It's about getting young women motivated to participate in sports.

The next story was called Frozen Football Field: New Station At The Top Of The World. Cathy Parker, wife of a football coach, coordinated a project to bring football to a school in a small town in Alaska called Barrow. Its mostly Eskimo population has a high drop-out rate and a lot of drug and alcohol use among teens. Kids don't have a lot of opportunities so getting a football field up there is something appreciated by the kids and all the teachers at the school. She is today's hero.
Martina McBride was Today's Summer Concert Series performer and played one last song before the end of the show.

More highlights from the America The Beautiful series ended the show.

And that's a wrap. Have a great weekend.

Thursday on Today 8/23

Today's Style featured Bobby's Beauty Bag with Bobbie Thomas. Four Ways To Stay Smooth: Removing Unwanted Hair. Laser removal is the most permanent and least painful (at least that's what they say) way to get rid of unwanted hair but it's also the most expensive at $200-$700 a treatment and you need about seven. I think I'll hang on to my razor for now. Then there's waxing--probably the most painful hair remover. But you can ask for a numbing cream. I think you'd need general anesthesia to numb that kind of pain. You can also learn to use wax at home if you can stand the pain with waxworks which is available at http://completelybare.com/. For die hard shavers like me, you can go to http://whishbody.com/ to get some type of men's shave kits. You can use a depilatory or cream that you just spread on and rinse off in the shower. My problem with those is you have to wait around for them to work before you rinse. I don't have the patience for that. And then there are those new products like Veet that use heat to destroy hair follicles over time. I've never tried those so I don't know if they work.

Today's Money: Splurge vs. Steal At Home. Jean Chatzky showed us what to spend on and what to save on starting in the kitchen with the microwave, which you can save on. No need to spend more than $60. You should splurge on a pepper mill--who knew? I don't even own one. Knives are also something you should splurge on, according to Jean, because they'll last longer. You can save on a food processor like one from Hamilton Beach for $50. Moving on to the living room; splurge on a couch. You shouldn't be able to lift it--that makes cleaning tough. Not to mention rearranging the furniture. You can save on a coffee table. Splurge on flowers. No supermarket shopping for those. Save on a stationary bike but splurge on a treadmill. Save on a headboard but splurge on a mattress and sheets too. That's Jean Chatzky's advice. Take it or leave it.

It's been a long time since I've seen The Critic's Corner. I wonder what Gene Shallot does with his time when he's not reviewing movies. Today he gave a good review of the British farce, "Death At A Funeral." This is my type of film and looks hilarious. Frank Oz, who's directed everything from all the Muppets movies to "Bowfinger" and "Housesitter" gives us a comedy to die for--Gene's words, not mine. And as he says, the first three letters in funeral are f-u-n.

There were some problems with the weather today and I'm not talking about the flooding in Findlay Ohio. Al's fill-in, doing the weather from there, got cut off for my local weather, then my local weather got cut off for a weather map of the entire country and no dialogue. This happens from time to time but it looks like both sides screwed this one up.

It's been ten years since Princess Diana's untimely death and newspaper editors in Britain are finally admitting some guilt over the paparazzi's role in her death. If they hadn't been chasing her, the car probably wouldn't have been speeding and there'd probably have been no accident. Too little, too late. But at least they're showing some humanity in admitting their fault.

Today's Home featured Lou Manfredini showing Quick Fixes Around The House. Five Common Problems, starting with the toilet--poor flushing due to clogged ports. Those are the holes under the rim. Just use a stiff brush and a calcium remover. From there it gets tougher. I'm just going to write down what was listed--I really can't describe any more than that. Raise flapper to stop a leaky toilet. A new flapper costs about $6. For a sticky door, use 3" wood screw to realign the door. Use a self adhesive metal wall kit for holes in the walls to patch them up. He made that look a lot easier than I'm sure it really is. He also showed a way to use a bowl over a carpet stain and then tack the unclean carpet. I have no idea what he means and my two year-old won out over the TV, so I couldn't hear much. The last tip was to use #0000 steal wool on wood tables. Maybe to get rid of scratches. Most of this stuff looked to me like it should be handled by a professional, but visit the Today website if you're brave enough to try any of these.

Today's Fitness was about Yoga For Mommy And Me. Take a class if you can find one but there are plenty of videos you can try at home. Gurmukh is a yogi whom they spoke with about the benefits of yoga. I have a couple of her videos, The Method prenatal yoga and The Method Postnatal Baby and Me for mamma and baby. They're great and I highly recommend this as a way to get back into shape and relax with your baby.

And That's a wrap. Till tomorrow.

Wednesday on Today 8/22

Today's Classroom: Sending Your Child To College. Parents sometimes have a hard time facing the reality of their kids leaving home. They're not just entering college but they're leaving your house. Michele Borba from iVillage gave some advice for parents such as, be prepared. It's a very emotional time so you should say your good-byes before you leave home. You don't want to lose it and start bawling while you're kid's getting out of the car. Be sure to have a financial talk and one about drinking--especially binge drinking. Once on campus, follow your child's lead and locate essential places. Here Michele almost had Natalie Morales and myself in tears with these next bits of advice: Parting words--think about what to say in advance. Give one last look--you won't see him/her for a while. And it's okay to shed a tear. Once back home don't go and change the bedroom around. They will be back during breaks. One last saying from a Navajo proverb: "We raise our kids to leave us."

Ann Curry interviewed Brad Pitt in New Orleans. One-On-One with Brad Pitt. Why couldn't that be my job? Brad is in New Orleans as an advocate for environmental concerns and affordable housing. He says Hurricane Katrina was a man-made disaster, not a natural one, and the government has a responsiblility to make it right. Amen to that. But don't look to this administration to make anything right. They specialize in making things worse. On the bright side, I don't think it's possible to get a worse president than we have now.

Well, the American people have spoken and the winning couple is Cody and Jessica. They are the lucky couple who will get married on natioinal TV with Today Throws A Martha Stewart Wedding. Darcy Miller was there with the happy soon-to-be-weds in a segment about Wedding Gift Registry Ideas. The best advice: Register at at least one department store and online so out of town guests can easily shop. Another idea for an original wedding gift was a cake stand with recipes on it from Macy's. For the sports minded, golf lessons (for the spouse) and personalized golf balls for the golf enthusiast were suggested. I know a couple whose marriage ended because the wife gave the husband an ultimatum and he chose golf. He was an addict. Luckily my husband hasn't tried golf. The wine of the month club, wine glasses and monogrammed leather coasters were other ideas. Also for the couple who has everything--donate to charity. You can choose anyone from the ASPCA to the Arbor Day Foundation. This is a great idea. How many wine glasses and leather coasters does anybody need? Put the money to a good cause.

Today's Kitchen was All About Okra. Scott Peacock from Watershed Restaurant showed different okra recipes, such as fritters battered and fried--those looked delicious. He also roasted some with veggies. Corn, bacon and okra was the last dish featured. For those and other recipes, visit the Today show website.

R&B singer, songwriter, Ne-Yo, was in the studio for a quick interview and a song. He ended the show with "Because Of You," from the CD of the same name. I love that song.

And that's a wrap. Till tomorrow.

Tuesday on Today 8/21

Al Roker was doing the weather today from Chetumal, Mexico as the hurricane was bringing down rain and kicking up the wind. Maybe he'll get blown off his feet again like he did last year.

Separation Anxiety: Getting Over Divorce. Did you ever hear of a divorce financial analyst? I didn't until this segment with Stacy Francis who is one of the aforementioned analysts, and psychologist, Debra Mandel, author of "Dump That Chump!" Catchy title. They both shared advice for women going through a divorce. And the number one word of advice is also today's page from the book of the obvious: create a budget. Seems every segment gives that same piece of advice. The average divorced woman will see her standard of living decrease by 45%. Other advice was to take time to heal. If you're still carrying around resentment toward your ex, you're not ready to start dating again. Protect yourself financially and think about getting your own health insurance. You can stay on your ex-husband's insurance for about 36 months but it may be cheaper to get your own. I don't know how that works when kids are involved because they didn't mention it.

In Style Today was about being Sexy In The City For Fall. Key Fall Trends. In LA the key fall trend is skinny jeans. This model had on a belted cardigan over her skinny jeans and was probably the best dressed of all of them. The Dallas must have are dresses in bold colors. The model wore a mustard yellow dress that looked like something my mother might have worn when she was pregnant. Certainly not anything I would be wearing out in public. The Chicago model had on men's wear inspired trousers and the one from Miami wore a tiny micro skirt and bold patterned top with hideous shoes that looked like shoe string licorice tied around her feet and ankles. Obviously the hooker look is in for Miami. The New York look was much more civilized with silver bodice suit. Metallics are in for New York. The one key trend all the models had was a clutch--a must have for Fall.

With the next weather update, Al lost his video and had to report with audio only but they showed some earlier footage of some of the extensive storm damage.

Today's Travel had Philip Levine, Cruise Expert (is there anything you can't be an expert in these days?), showing us Excitement At Sea. Today's cruises are no longer about shuffle board. There's lots to do and they are very active. Royal Carribean's Freedom Of The Seas line has a rock-climbing wall and surfing among other attractions. Cunard Cruise Line is the owner of the Queen Elizabeth II where you can bring your dog--wow! That's something I would consider for that reason alone. Sea Dream Yacht Club has a more intimate atmosphere for a little more money than a regular cruise. Princess Cruises feature movies under the stars--like a drive-in except on a ship deck. Norweigan Cruises have bowling at sea. Crystal Cruises have wine lessons in a private vintage room--sounds like fun. A cruise has not really been on my list of things to do, but after seeing this I may just book one. Especially if I can bring my dogs. Hope they don't get seasick. But they made it on the Block Island ferry without a problem, so they should be all set. To see pictures of my Boston and Bulldog go to http://cafepress.com/karmicbulldog.

Good News For Parents: New Youth Happiness Poll by MTV finds the top answer to the question of what makes youths happy is spending time with their parents. The kids were probably lying. That certainly wouldn't have been my honest answer when I was a teenager. According to the poll, 64% of teens with parents still together wake up happy verses 47% who's parents are divorced. Most kids say their parents are their idols, with the highest percentage going to mom. This is good news if you can trust the source.

Today's Kitchen featured The Scottos visit to Italy. Apparently, this is part two and I didn't see part one. But this family went to Italy and brought back some good Italian recipes from Venice. Like potato gnocchi, calamari with some black stuff--not sure what that was--and some branzino (sea bass) with sauce topped with capers. Dessert was a delicious looking tiramisu. I love that stuff.

And that's a wrap. Till tomorrow.

Monday on Today 8/20

Hope you had a good weekend. It was a good weekend for the movie "Super Bad," which was number 1 at the box office even though it received less than stellar reviews--one out of five stars in my local paper. It looks about as funny as a bad case of acne. Number 2 was last week's number 1, "Rush Hour 3," followed by "The Bourne Ultimatum" at number 3.

Al Roker was at the National Hurricane Center today tracking hurricane Dean but still doing the weather around the country and sending it back to your local news station for a check of your local weather.

Fighting The Good Fight: What Should You Be Arguing About? That was the question about fighting with your spouse. Dave Zinczenko, Editor In Chief of Men's Health Magazine and Psychiatrist, Dr. Jane Taylor, gave advice for fighting fair such as saying "I feel...when you..." instead of saying "You always..." You never..." You get the idea. Avoid zingers and sarcasm which leads to nastiness and divorce. They also suggested topics you should talk about with your partner such as sex, how to raise the kids, retirement, extended family, the relationship and adult kids. Don't wait until a problem arises. These are things that should be discussed openly.

Glamour Executive Fashion Editor, Suze Yatof Schwartz showed us Best In Beauty Products. The Glammy Awards were chosen by regular consumers who use and like these products. In most cases, they chose an expensive product and a cheaper counterpart. For everyday moisturizers they chose Olay Complete All Day and a Clinique equivalent. Personally, I don't know why you'd spend the extra money on Clinique when Olay is cheaper and just as effective. But some people like the prestige associated with expensive products. They also liked Olay Regenerist along with an expensive alternative, which I didn't catch. I pay attention to the beauty bargains. Great Lash Mascara at $6.50 was a top pick along with Lancome which will run you $28. Again, you make the call. They also had some lip gloss but I missed the brands--sorry. Covergirl blush was a hit along with Bare Minerals. Bare Minerals foundation was chosen as well as Loreal True Match. Jergens Natural Glow lotion is great--I love it. You can also spend more on Clarins if you want. Britney Spears Curious was picked for fragrance as was Victoria's Secret Dream Angels. St. Ives Apricot Scrub is a must have--another one of my favorites, as was the more expensive Bath and Body Works Vanilla something or other. The Matrix Sleek Look was on the list for a shine enhancing shampoo along with John Frieda Brilliant Brunette--they didn't mention the products for blondes and redheads. For frizz tamers, they chose Biosilk and John Frieda.

Matt Lauer interviewed a couple rescued from flood waters in Kingfisher, OK. Leroy and Bernice Krittenbrink, an elderly couple, were stranded on the cab of their truck and then moved to the bed until that also started filling up with water. They almost ran out of room--and luck before a helicopter saved them. But not before Bernice fell off the helicopter skid and back into the water. The rescuers were able to get her back up and now the couple are doing fine. Bernice even got her hair done before her national TV debut.

Today's Woman featured: How To Raise Confident Daughters. Susan Johnson and Kimberly Webb are the authors of the book, "Princess Bubble" which teaches girls that you don't need to be rescued by some prince or knight in shining armor. We all grew up on those fairy tales featuring the damsel in distress. Well this book lets girls know that they're in charge--not to wait around for some man to help them. Sounds like a great book and I'll get it for my daughter when she's old enough to understand it--now she's only two. Michele Borba, iVillage Contributor, advised us to talk to our daughters and set a positive example. To instill confidence, be confident yourself. Other suggestions were: stay connected, foster her strengths and passions and find good role models. It can be anyone as long she is strong and inspiring with the right values to instill in your daughters.

Today's iVillage Back To School showed Dinner ABCs. Madelyn Fernstrom showed different unconventional ideas for a healthy dinner when you're short on time such as a bowl of cereal. Why not? It's fast, easy and healthy too. Plus, my kids actually like it which is an accomplishment in itself. Make a sandwich with lettuce and tomato on whole wheat bread and you have a balanced meal in minutes. Tomato soup with a glass of milk is perfect for a cold night. Or have a salad with whole grain rolls. Now these are my kinds of meals--no cooking involved. She suggested to keep your fridge stocked with healthy foods like veggies and fruits. That makes it easy to have a healthy dinner in minutes.

And that's a wrap. Till tomorrow.
